How to Enter

  1. 1. Prepare your Tote as Canvas.

  2. 2. Create your art piece.

    Anyone can participate, whether professional, amateur, or group, and all techniques are permitted, including oil paint, watercolors, acrylic paint, India ink, embroidery, stencils, and photographic transfers. Please create your art after confirming the rules and guidelines for applying.

  3. 3. Take a picture of your art piece.

    Submission format: JPEG
    Image size (rough guide): 640×480 pixels
    Resolution: 72 dpi, 1 MB or less

    *Photograph it in as bright a location as possible.
    *Refer to past web galleries.
  4. 4. Apply. (Email us your image.)

    Using our application form, fill in all required fields, attach the image from your digital camera, and submit your application.

Application Guidelines

  • Submission Period

    Every year, from October 10 of the previous year (Tote Bag Day) to August 31 of the following year. Submissions received during this period will be judged around the end of September, and the winning pieces will be announced on October 10. Entries received on or after September 1 will be entered the following year.

  • Submission qualifications

    Anyone may apply, whether professional or amateur. (Group submissions are also allowed.)

  • Number of submission pieces

    No restrictions

  • Materials

    Please note that no tote bag other than a Tote as Canvas bag may be used.

  • Methods

    all techniques are permitted, including oil paint, watercolors, acrylic paint, India ink, embroidery, stencils, and photographic transfers.

  • How to apply

    Please refer to the application form and fill out, and send the image taken by digital camera.

  • Prizes and Awards

    Commemorative prizes are awarded to the competition’s one first-place winner, five runner-up winners, numerous other winners, and special award winner (a category for elementary-school competitors and younger).

    If we receive the artists’ permission, we will purchase the actual pieces (paying 200,000 yen for the first-prize piece and 100,000 yen for the runners-up).

  • Judging and Announcement of the Winners

    We judge the Tote as Canvas Design Awards every year in late September. The results are announced on this website on October 10 (Tote Bag Day).

  • Display of Art Pieces

    • We will publicly display all submitted art pieces in the net gallery of this website.
    • Sometimes, we also hold an Art Exhibition of winning pieces at our gallery in Tokyo, so we would be grateful for your cooperation in lending us your piece in such an event.

Application Rules

  • About Art Pieces

    (1) Submitted art pieces are limited to unpublished pieces. They are limited to pieces that have not been published through other contests or on other websites, and which are not planned for such publication. It is also limited to items whose copyrights belong completely to the applicant.
    (2) Copyrights of published pieces shall belong to the artist. Design rights and copyrights of prize-winning pieces shall belong to the sponsor company. They cannot be used anywhere without permission anywhere except on the artist’s own website.
    (3) If the applicant is anyone other than the photographer, the artist’s consent must be obtained.
    (4) In the unlikely event that a dispute between the applicant and a third party arises regarding the submitted art piece, dispute resolution shall be the responsibility of the applicant, and absolutely no imposition shall be made upon the sponsor of these design awards (hereinafter referred to as the Sponsor) or upon any other applicant.
    (5) Photographs that have been edited by computer will not be accepted. Other sample images and copyright-free images cannot be used.
    (6) Winning art pieces may be used on our company’s website and in advertising.
    (7) Photographic image data will not be returned.

  • Content Restrictions for Art Pieces

    If an art piece is deemed by the Sponsor to fit any of the descriptions below, the sponsor may disqualify the piece from the judging without notifying the applicant.
    (1) The piece is contrary to public order and morality, or has the potential of being so.
    (2) The copyrights or likeness rights of a third party have been infringed, or the piece has the potential to infringe such rights.
    (3) The piece injuriously slanders a third party or invades the privacy of a third party; or it has the potential to do so.
    (4) The piece violates the law or is connected to criminal activity; or it has the potential to do so.
    (5) The piece does not accord with the intentions of these design awards as deemed by the Sponsor.

  • Other

    (1) These design awards in their entirety are put on by the Sponsor’s design award secretariat (hereinafter referred to as the Secretariat). The Secretariat, if it deems necessary, may freely change the terms of application, and take all steps necessary in order to ensure the proper management of these design awards.
    (2) In applying for these design awards, the applicant shall follow the administrative processes of the Secretariat and shall forego any and all objections to this process.
    (3) No damages at all arising from the use or impossibility of use of this design award website shall be construed as the responsibility of the Sponsor.
